Sport-Schuster Munich celebrates 100 yearsMunich based sports retailer Sport-Schuster celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.
Opened in 1913, by 30 year old mountaineer August Schuster, near Marienplatz in Munich, Sports-Schuster is today on of the most renowned outdoor retailers both inside and outside of Germany and still in the hands of the family.
The pioneering retailer has contributed not only to retail history, but also to the history of mountaineering; Hermann Buhl, employee at Sport-Schuster, was the first man to climb 1953 the Nanga Parbat (8125 m), one of the highest and most difficult mountains on earth. For decades Sport-Schuster has repeatedly equipped pioneering expeditions and to this day its employees are still active athletes and mountain guides.
“Our next big challenge”, says Flori Schuster, grandson of the founder, “will be our growth in online business.” Already experienced in multi-channel retail with the Sport-Schuster catalogue, online business will be a big part of the future strategy. “As a family business with a long tradition, adding our USP to our online business will be the most challenging task for the future.” New store openings in Munich of rival retailers such as Globetrotter two years ago and the upcoming opening of SportScheck in autumn this year will be a challenge for Sport-Schuster.
Sport-Schuster began celebrating its anniversary by giving a 20% discount on the whole assortment of the house and a further 50% discount on selected items.
