Esprit sponsors EcoChic Design Award 2013Fashion company Esprit sponsors the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Redress’ competition for sustainable design. The EcoChic Design Award 2013 invites young designers from all over the world to produce fashion with as little residual material and waste as possible.
For the fourth edition of the EcoChic Design Award, the number of countries where sustainable design talents are selected has been extended to Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Singapore, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium and Germany. An international judging panel will choose eight finalists to present their collections at Hong-Kong Fashion Week 2014. Here, the winner of the award will be announced and then given the possibility to create a Recycled Collection for Esprit in 2014, which will be sold internationally.
For 7 years, Hong-Kong-based fashion organisation Redress has intensively worked to make the fashion industry more sustainable. The NGO believes that the designers’ decisions can be of fundamental importance in tackling the textile-waste problem: currently, 15-20% of the textiles in the manufacturing process are off-cuts.
Christina Dean, CEO and founder of Redress, comments: “Many people talk about sustainability in the fashion industry, but often no action is taken. Our aim is to solve the problem of excessive waste production and the loss of the economic value. The EcoChic Award 2013 calls young designers from all over the world to reduce the waste and therefore sustainably shape the mass market and the fashion industry of tomorrow from the beginning.”
The deadline for the submission of proposals is August 15th, 2013.
