Retailer of the week: Gianni Arteni, owner of Arteni in Udine, ItalyOffering about 600 brands - including sportswear, denim, streetwear, pret-à-porter, activewear, design objects and furniture - Arteni is a family-run group of 16 stores employing 200 people. They’ve been involved in the fashion business for the last 50 years, though the group was founded in 1827. Here, owner Gianni Arteni delves into his customers’ continued trust in the group's expertise, welcoming atmosphere and professional personnel. Despite current economic difficulties, clients keep coming back to the Arteni stores because of their wide selection of trendy merchandise and constant focus of top quality. Interview by Maria Cristina Pavarini.
What are the current bestsellers and why?
We have various bestsellers right now because our store offers a wide assortment of brands, collections and segments from a total of about 300 Italian and international companies. Regarding sportswear, our bestselling items are currently outerwear and jackets.
Where do you place your orders? How do you inform yourself about trends?
We get our information from the usual channels such as trade shows, trade magazines, agents and other various marketing operations including testimonials.
Can you tell us about the collections you have in store for next season?
We like to offer different trends so that our consumers can choose according to their own tastes. As leaders in our area and with so many stores, it is important that we offer all of the available trends so that we can target all market segments and consumer groups. Because of this, apart from our core business, which is 360° fashion, we also offer activewear and sports gear, home textiles, decor objects and furniture through smaller, specialized stores.

Will you include new brands for the upcoming season?
Every season we include new brands and, considering that our selection is made up of about 600, it’s hard to name them all. We mainly focus on products that are characterized by a strong price-quality ratio because of a mushrooming of outlets in the surrounding areas. Traditional multibrand stores like ours are losing market quotes because these outlets offer their products at prices up to 30%-70% off all year long and during the sales season they cut another 20%. We can’t go on like this!
How does your store differ from other stores?
I think that our stores offer a complete vision of the fashion panorama. In addition, a company that has been serving the market for over 50 years in this part of Italy, and is popular among Northern European tourists, has to concentrate on quality products that others don’t offer in order to continue growing despite the fact that the market is suffering.
What do you like about your customers?
Our clients are truly special because of their affection and faithfulness and the appreciation they are constantly showing for the service we provide.
How important is the interior, the atmosphere and the whole package?
More than anything else today, a welcoming atmosphere and attitude are fundamental to the feeling of a store, as are pleasant interiors, clean and easy-to-find merchandise subdivisions and, last but not least, professional personnel.
