GDS and Global Shoes, the Düsseldorf shoe fairs that took place March 14-16, came to an end fewer visitors compared to last year. There were approximately 23,150 reported trade visitors and about 1206 exhibitors from 44 countries presenting the newest trends for the fall/winter 2012/13 seasons. However, the atmosphere was positive due to increased sales in March and new colourful fashion trends. “We had a sensational fair,” confirmed Willy Umland of Converse. “We’re surprised--we didn’t expect such a success,” added Walter from Mustang Shoes.

Order volumes were higher than last season’s. A survey of the fair confirmed this tendency; 37% of all buyers used GDS to place repeat orders and 62% of all German buyers reported a consistent repeat order volume for the 2012 Spring/Summer season, while 22% said volume had increased. Wedges and ankle boots with plateau soles, chukka boots with characteristic chunky seams, high loafers, rubber soles, outdoor boots with mountain elements, colourful laces, suedes and desert boots were on high demand. GDS Director Kirstin Deutelmoser reported that Chelsea boots are the must have for the next winter.

There were also some featured side events during the fair. The flying KangaROOS next generation presented a live performance with young skate and BMX talents. A fashion highlight was the opening show featuring Sara Nuru, winner of “Germany’s Next Top Model.” In collaboration with the Federal Association of the German Footwear and Leather Goods Industry (HDS), GDS once again presented three awards this year. Actor Bernhard Bettermann, a declared shoe fan from the ARD series “In aller Freundschaft,” took the “Schuh Oscar.” The winner of the 2012 German Shoe Prize was Bogner, awarded for its men’s and women’s “Kitzbühel” and “St. Anton” ankle boots. The HDS Junior Award went to Czech designer Lenka Morková from the Institute of Art and Design at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen.

The next GDS/Global Shoes fairs will be held from September 5-7 of this year.
