FGI Names Its 2013 Rising StarsFashion’s future was lauded at The Fashion Group International’s (FGI) 16th Annual Rising Star Awards, which were held yesterday at a gala luncheon at Cipriani restaurant on 42nd Street.
The Accessories award went to socialite Cornelia Guest for her eponymous line of animal-free handbags, which she launched two and half years ago. “I don’t think animals have to suffer for us,” she declared in her acceptance speech. Her bags are carried by Bloomingdale’s and have average retail price points of about $200.
Last year’s Ecco Domani Best New Menswear Designer of the Year Award–winner Tim Coppens picked up another trophy for his mantel by winning the Menswear category. Coppens, who was born, raised and educated in Belgium but now works from New York, was unable to attend the ceremony and had his colleague and fellow company designer Johan Åkesson accept the award on his behalf.
Derek Lam presented the Women’s Ready-to-Wear Award. He opened the envelope and revealed that the result was a tie between Norman Ambrose and Tia Cibani. Both recipients delivered grateful acceptance remarks.
The other Rising Star winners included Estée Lauder Companies’ Alana Hawawini for Beauty/Fragrance Corporate, Mexican lighting designer Gustavo Carmona Muñoz of Materia Arquitectónica for Home/Interior Design, Carlos Huber of Arquiste Parfumeur for Beauty/Frangrance Entrpreneur, Alexandra Mor of Alexandra Mor New York for Fine Jewelry, Birchbox’s Hayley Barna and Katie Beauchamp for Retail and Meggan Krum and Mandy Tang of therunthrough.com, the recipients of the first ever Karen Harvey Business Innovator Award.
Fashion veteran Ralph Rucci gave the ceremony’s keynote address and received rapturous applause when he noted that he has been in the business for more than 30 years.
