BOGNER – SPORTS AND FASHION IN MOTION

The Artgalery Apolda Avantgarde near Weimar, Germany is presenting an exhibition through June 13 to honor the German ski and sports fashion company Bogner. “Bogner – Sports and Fashion in Motion” tells the history of the company that was founded in 1932. Maria Bogner, wife of founder Willy Bogner Sr., invented ski-fashion with her elegant and skinny ski-pants, so called “Keilhosen.” Today, the company, led by son Willy Bogner Jr. and his wife Sônia, is sold worldwide and offers the collections including Sônia Bogner, Bogner Woman, Bogner Man, Bogner Sport, Bogner Fire + Ice and Bogner Kids, as well as diverse, licensed collections.

In addition to the company’s history and several original styles from the Bogner archives, the exhibition also shows the athletic success of Willy Bogner Jr. His career as a professional skier – he participated twice at the Olympic games in the ’60s – and his enthusiastic ski movies such as “Fire & Ice” and “Ski to the Max” were an international success and the some of the most successful sports movies in Germany. He also acted in four James Bond movies, doubling as Bond in certain extreme skiing scenes.

The brand’s connection to pro sports lives on, with Bogner sponsoring Germany’s Olympic team for the 17th time at the Vancouver Winter Olympics.Bogner employs worldwide about 700 people and reported a turnover in 2009 of €173.1 million. Artgalery Apolda Aventgarde specializes in fashion exhibits, with past shows including “Textile Drawings of the Russian Avantgarde” (1999), “Wolfgang Joop – Illustrations” (2002), “Karl Lagerfeld – Photografy” (2005), and “Adidas – The Great Variety of Three Stripes” (2008).
