H&M’s first Australian store opens with a hype

Last Saturday, April 5, H&M opened its first ever Australian store in Melbourne’s shopping arcade GPO. The opening was accompanied by more than 3.000 excited customers: Starting at 6 am, Australian H&M fans came to queue in front of the historic former post office building and waited for the store to open at 10 am. During their waiting time, they were entertained with music played by DJ Anna Lunoe, coffee and juice served by H&M care carts and a beauty cart offering a touch up for the customers.

H&M’s CEO, Karl-Johan Persson, Australia Country Manager, Hans Andersson and Store Managers, Tania Heywood and Glen Colliver officially cut the ribbon and welcomed the first eager shoppers. “It’s exciting to finally have the opportunity to bring H&M to Australian shores, especially to launch in the GPO building which is such an iconic and beautiful Melbourne landmark” said Andersson.

H&M’s first Australian store sells apparel, underwear and accessories for men, women, kids and babies, as well as H&M’s Home concept on 5,000 sqm spread over three floors. A specially designed ‘Australia Exclusive Collection’ will also be available for the launch and features 47 items of limited edition apparel and accessories for men and women.

On the launch day, customers received a t-shirt designed by a student of Melbourne’s RMIT College with every purchase. To prepare this campaign, H&M ran a design competition with the RMIT students late last year.
