Show Report: Project NY–Small But Successful


Next stop, Las Vegas.
The Project show concluded its January 2014 edition at Pier 94 in New York City yesterday after a three-day run.
Significantly smaller than its large Las Vegas edition next month, the event showcased only about 100 brands in the advanced contemporary, premium denim and footwear sectors. The latter was given its own section this time, ProjectsoleNYC, which featured just over 30 shoe brands. Among them was Cole Haan, Ben Sherman and Trask, a heritage US brand now owned by footwear giant Genesco. It offered a mix of traditional and more fashionable styles of shoes and accessories in lux materials such as American bison and Norwegian elk skin.
Once again, Project was the show for premium denim. Major players showing there included 7 for All Mankind, AG, Agave, Big Star USA, Denim & Leathers Andrew Marc DL, Hudson and J Brand. Also on hand was Citizens of Humanity, which introduced its revamped men’s collection by designer Simon Miller. He has replaced the leather patches, changed the logo so it reads “C of H Man” and added slightly younger, slimmer silhouettes to the assortment. At the Raleigh booth, owner Victor Lytvinenko explained how the brand has added both lower priced and more expensive models to its collection this season to increase its potential customer reach.
In the contemporary section Jeff Halmos of Shipley & Halmos showed its fall collection, which included nubby bomber-style jackets and patched distressed jeans. Nearby the Tomorrow section showcased up-and-coming brands.
Exhibitors seemed pleased with traffic, especially Chris Nonn of Darring. “This show has been incredible,” he said.
The next Project show will take place in Las Vegas February 18-20.
