Levi's X Dyneema
22 Oct. 2013
Levi's and Dyneema join forcesLevi's and Dyneema, an Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene produced by DSM, have joined forces.
Dyneema considers itself the world’s strongest fibre. It can be found in bullet-resistant armour for law enforcement officers, metalworker’s gloves, and safety gear for cyclists. From now on this strong, tear-resistant fibre can be found in Levi’s 501 Warrior and Trooper styles.
Incorporating the Dyneema fibre into the cotton blend of the jeans gives the product a 25% performance improvement in abrasion resistance and strength over traditional jeans of the same weight, meaning the new jeans last longer. Unlike other high strength fibres, Dyneema is soft and supple, so the jeans retain their comfort and fit. Both Levi Strauss & Co and DSM are committed to reducing their carbon footprint by creating sturdy, long-lasting products.
DSM Dyneema is the inventor and manufacturer of Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibre branded as Dyneema. Dyneema offers maximum strength at a minimum weight. It is up to 15 times stronger than quality steel and up to 40% stronger than aramid fibres, on a weight for weight basis. Dyneema fibre is extremely durable, floats on water and is resistant to moisture, UV light and chemicals. The applications are therefore more or less unlimited. Dyneema is an important component in rope, cable and nets in the fishing, shipping and offshore industries. Dyneema is also used in safety gloves for the metal working industry and in fine yarns for applications in sporting goods and the medical sector. In addition, Dyneema is also used in bullet-resistant armour and clothing for police and military personnel. UHMWPE fibre from DSM Dyneema is produced in Heerlen (The Netherlands) and in Greenville, North Carolina (U.S.A.). DSM Dyneema is also a partner in the production of High-modulus Polyethylene (HMPE) in Japan.
