Fashion delivers helps Hurricane Sandy victims

Fashion Delivers a fashion industry charity founded seven years ago to distribute new merchandise to disaster victims and those in need, joined forces with Movement Church of Staten Island, Third Day Mission and Tunnel to Towers Foundation to provide ravaged victims of Hurricane Sandy on Staten Island in New York with a pop-up shop of new, free apparel and home goods, which they could “shop” for just before Christmas.

The weekend event, which took place December 22 and 23, helped 3,000 people and offered 6 million US Dollar in new merchandise (250,000 items) donated by more than 100 fashion companies, including Armani Exchange, Hanesbrands, Burlington Coat Factory, Café Bleu, G-III Apparel Group, Uniqlo, ABS by Allen Schwartz, Skechers, Ben Sherman, French Connection, Hanky Panky, Nine West, The Jones Group, Members Only, Michael Kors, Patagonia, Ralph Lauren, Seavees, Skechers, Taylor Made/Adidas Golf and Wellensteyn USA. About 150 volunteers worked the event and helped to restock the racks.

“This event was the culmination of our experience supporting people who have lost their homes and belongings,” said Fashion Delivers chairman Allan Ellinger. “We are proud to offer a way for the fashion industries to step forward and help people start their road to recovery with dignity.”

The event, which people preregistered for with their disaster relief numbers to get an appointment time (thus preventing a long wait), gave each person a shopping bag and let them “shop” the pop-up store floor. Items ripe for the taking included designer handbags, shoes, clothing, coats and home goods.

The event was conceived by Charles Garone, and industry veteran and founder of the Aquilon men’s traveling trade show, after he read a Facebook post in November that Hurricane victims were in need of new clothes, not old ones. “The post was so touching, that I immediately contacted my friends at Fashion Delivers and volunteered my services to set up an event before Christmas. It was a huge undertaking in such a short amount of time, but I knew with the support of the fashion industry and the Staten Island community, we would get this accomplished,” he said.

Fashion Delivers has distributed nearly $150 million worth of product to families in need since 2005.
