Uniqlo: Store opening in Berlin


Japanese fashion brand Uniqlo has opened its first German store on Berlin’s Tauentzienstraße today. The 2.700 sqm sales area (Uniqlo’s biggest store in Europe) stretches over three floors and showcases the complete Uniqlo assortment including women’s, men’s and kid's wear.

Both Berndt Hauptkorn, Fast Retailing Group Officer and CEO of Uniqlo Europe and Kuni Matsubara, Store Manager of the Berlin store were present for the opening and underlined how very excited they were to enter this new market. “Berlin is one of the leading metropolises in the World. After successfully establishing Uniqlo in London, Paris and Moscow, it’s now time to repeat this success in Germany”, said Hauptkorn.

As every Uniqlo store since 2006, the Berlin flagship was designed by Tokyo-based architecture / interior design company Wonderwall of renowned designer Masamichi Katayama. The sales space is characterized by a light atmosphere containing wooden, stainless steel and mirror/glass elements. Highlights are an animated LED display showing the names of all Uniqlo locations worldwide and rotating display mannequins. Düsseldorf-based architecture office Schwitzke & Partner was responsible for the local implementation of the global retail concept and reconstructed the former Nike town space within five months.

The Berlin opening is accompanied by several opening offers in-store. Several of Uniqlo’s key products such as Ultra Light Down jackets, 100% cashmere jumpers will be offered with a €10 discount until April 19. Moreover, Uniqlo has teamed up with sister denim brand J Brand (also part of the Fast Retailing Group) and offers 2014 copies of LA-made pairs of J Brand premium denims for an exceptional price of €89,90 in the Berlin store. The mid-rise skinny fit model is available in two exclusively develop washings ‘Bauhaus’ and ‘Kommune’.

Today’s opening of Uniqlo’s Berlin flagship was prepared by a series of Uniqlo pop-up shops in different locations of the capital, started during Berlin Fashion Week in January.

Uniqlo currently operates more than 1.300 stores in 14 countries worldwide. In Europe, the brand is present with 18 branches in three countries: UK, France and Russia. The next step in Uniqlo’s European expansion will be a store opening in Paris’ hip Marais district.
