The Woolmark logo turns 50
50 years ago, the Italian graphic artist Francesco Saroglia designed the Woolmark logo, a design element that has become the worldwide symbol for best quality wool and until today it still represents one of the most global recognized logos.
For this anniversary, The Woolmark Company has promoted a series of celebrative events in Sydney with the aim to underline the historic relationship between the Australian wool industry and the application in most prestigious international fashion.
"We are proud to celebrate this anniversary with the World Wide Wool series of events that will involve prestigious global fashion and luxury brands positioning wool as an absolute premium fiber,” commented Stuart McCullough, CEO of The Woolmark Company. “Creating such a project in Sydney is a way for giving recognition to sheep farmers who have been producing the best fibers over the last 200 hundred years.”
In 2012-13, the amount of wool export in the New South Wales region only (among the most productive regions in Australia) was 600 million Australian dollars and Italy was registered as the second major market after China.
A vital part of the World Wide Wool project was a shopping night, taking place in the most prestigious shopping area of Sydney, held on 27 March. The Castlereagh Street and surrounding areas are hosting extraordinary sales initiatives inspired by Merino wool and its timeless elegance. The major fashion and luxury brands and the David Jones department store are involved in this unique “shopping night” and series of events dedicated to wool.
In addition to World Wide Wool, the Contemporary Art Museum of Sydney will also host the photo exhibition “An Artful Thread Between Fashion and Style” involving influential Australian personalities from the fashion, design, art, music, economy and high society such as Baz Luhrmann, Cate Blanchett, Nick Cave, Abbie Cornish, Chris Hemsworth, Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Catherine Martin and Marc Newson. The exhibition was also inaugurated on 27 March and will be kept open till 28 March for a selected VIP clientele.
The Museum will also host a series of installations of wool models designed by Australian designers such as Strateas & Carlucci, Dion Lee, Josh Goot, Christopher Esber, From Britten and Romance Was Born.
