TOMS SHOES WINS COOPER-HEWITT AWARD

TOMS Shoes (tomsshoes.com) is the people’s choice.

The Santa Monica, California-based company, which known for its slip-on styles based on traditional Argentine footwear and its commitment to matching every pair of shoes sold with a donation of a pair to a child in need, won the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum’s (cooperhewitt.org) second People’s Design Award at the museum’s eighth annual National Design Awards gala here last week.

The award, which was voted on by the public over the course of a month on the Cooper-Hewitt’s website, was presented to TOM’s founder Blake Mycoskie by designer Isaac Mizrahi (both pictured above).

National Design Week and the National Design Awards are sponsored by the retailer Target (target.com).

Following a trip to Argentina, Mycoskie founded TOMS in 2006. During the first year of business alone, TOMS sold 10,000 pairs of shoes and Mycoskie returned to Argentina to lead the company’s first shoe drop. Next month, Mycoskie will travel to Africa and deliver more than 50,000 pairs of TOMS to kids in need.

"I’m delighted that for the second year in a row, the public has chosen a socially conscious design that not only looks great, but helps the lives of less fortunate people around the world,” said Cooper-Hewitt director Paul Warwick Thompson.

The ceremony also honored designer Rick Owens with the Fashion Design Award, which the Cooper-Hewitt gives to an individual or firm for exceptional and exemplary work in clothing, footwear or accessories design.
