Toms shoes raises awareness with barefoot day

‘One Day without Shoes’ is an annual event hosted by TOMS shoes in which students, friends, parents, total strangers, and co-workers can participate in different events without shoes. This year, the ‘Barefoot Day’ was on April 5. Some participants went without shoes for an hour, some for the whole day, but all became part of a greater movement towards change. For the event, all participants could also create their own t-shirt. TOMS offered banners and other decorating material to participants in order to leave a message on sidewalks, windows or laptop screens.

Oklahoma State senators, Andrew Rice and Steve Russell, joined TOMS shoes by declaring ‘One Day Without Shoes’ a state holiday. In their suits and ties, they kicked off their shoes and inspired their fellow State senators to participate. Also a lot of celebs like Chaske Spence and Julia Jones from Twilight, actress Cheryl Tiegs, Dawn Olivieri from Vampire Diaries, Gillian Zinser from 90210, or designer Tory Burch left off their shoes for a day.

The involvement of TOMS shoes has an impact on the lives of children in the third world. According to TOMS, many children walk without shoes for miles each day and they often cannot attend school without proper footwear. In Ethiopia, approximately 1 million people are suffering from a debilitating disease called podoconiosis, which is 100% preventable with basic hygiene and shoes. By giving shoes to protect the people from the dangerous city streets littered with glass, metal, and even sewage, TOMS shoes can help. In addition, with every pair one purchases at TOMS, the company gives a pair of new shoes to a child in need.
