Successful debut for Denim By PV in Barcelona


The first edition of Denim by PV, which was held in Barcelona for the first time was successful. The specialized denim show held in Hall 8 of the Fira Montjuic, on 21-22 May 2014, was crowded with international denim and jeans insiders. Visitors and exhibitors appreciated the new location, its highly specialized, though friendly and welcoming atmosphere, its trend-driven informative areas, the inspirational spirit pervading the event and the generally warm – and at the same time - international attitude of the city.

Despite of the fact that many insiders felt skeptical about moving to Barcelona and the recent debut of Kingpins in Amsterdam, the general attitude that pervaded the show was enthusiastic and optimistic. According to many insiders, the market feels that a general recovery is just around the corner. The series of denim-focused events taking place in this period – especially in Europe – bear witness to such an evolution and the presence of many international visitors at Denim By PV. An international spirit pervaded the event since Europeans, US, Japanese and Turkish visitors crowded the show.

At the opening conference Chantal Malingrey, director, Denim by Première Vision commented: "We are not here to gamble or play around. This is a longtime engagement with Barcelona. We decided to move to Barcelona because it is important for the business of the denim community to be on the move and to be alive" And continues: "We had checked several possibilities but decided for Barcelona because the city has the perfect mix: it is cosmopolitan, the infrastructure is great and it is about art, design, fashion and lifestyle".

Philippe Pasquet, CEO, Première Vision, commented: "Première Vision is about three things: selectivity of exhibitors, an international approach to visitors and our support as a structure focused on global events, and fashion information service." And since many insiders wanted to hear what the show thought of the recent debut of Kingpins in Amsterdam, Pasquet’s answer was: "You cannot compare Kingpins and their event in Amsterdam with Denim by Première Vision – they are two different things."

The show presented previews for f/w 2015-2016 from 100 exhibitors, 5% more than in May 2013. The majority of them were weavers (45%). The remaining ones were garment manufacturers, launderers and finishers (23%), accessory makers (22%) plus machine makers, fiber producers and spinners and technology developers. Exhibitors came from 20 different countries, even if the majority of them were from Turkey (31%), Italy (20%), Morocco (9%) and Tunisia (3%), plus exhibitors from Japan, India, Pakistan, Hong Kong and Brazil.

The first day of the show closed with a party held at the cool nightlife area Barceloneta near the sea in the Opium Mar nightlife spot with great fun and a cool atmosphere until very late.

Comfy and earth-friendly
The season’s next trends focused especially on improving performance and visual aspects of already existing denims. Above all, function and comfort remain hot topics. Almost every company is launching its own selection of denims that resemble indigo sweatshirt material. Hi-function stretch remains a strong trend for all manufacturers – for both women and men. Isko, for instance, has launched its Isko Mens selection of stretch fabrics that is also recalling attention for women’s jeans employ, also looking for masculine aspect comfortable fabrics. Sustainability also continues to recall attention. Bossa is presenting a new selection of its Re.Set denims made with 100% recycled fibers – 30% is recycled polyester and the remaining 70% is made with recycled cotton. Calik has launched a series of denims made with natural fibers, including one that employs Crailar, a natural fiber similar to linen. Cone Denim has just launched their new highly functional and eco-friendly stretch denim ConeTouch with Repreve innovation. Repreve is made by Unifi from recycled bottles and each pair of jeans made with material employs the recycled fiber obtained from about eight plastic bottles. Chemical manufacturer Archroma has launched its new and wide selection of eco-friendly dyes – Optisul C – that require a small quantity of water. Mactec, treating machine manufacturer, presented its own exclusive technology Icelite that “de-colors” garments by using recovered CO2 with a clean, safe and ecological system that enables to save up to 40 liters of water per treated garment. Label manufacturer Label Mark presented its new Mad’ collection of labels and packaging made with a new cellulose material that looks, feels and can be treated and dyed exactly in the same way as leather.

More novelties
Tavex has launched a new stretch denim treated with a special permanent finish that can have anti-cellulite effect on its wearers. TextilSantanderina offered a selection of stretch cotton-Tencel jacquard denims characterized by innovative weaves and optics. Orta developed a new Round Midnight selection of denims characterized by special opaque coatings that convey a smart and cool aspect to fabrics as well as a series of denim with soft glittery aspects resembling, for instance crystal surface or herringbone light reflecting weaves. Denim Valley by Tejidos Royo, through the Fundacion Jose y Ana Royo, has presented a new collaboration with design school IED. Some of the students designed some special denim items including a kid’s holder to be worn by mothers and origami-like denim conceptual garments.
