Show report: MRKET NY

Held in the North Concourse, a new area of its home at the Javits Center, the January 2014 edition of the MRKet trade show concluded a successful three-day run on Tuesday. Although it was held several days later than the other NYC menswear trade shows due to a space-scheduling conflict, exhibitors at the show said they still did good business overall. Bill Thomas of the line Bills Khakis and its new younger-targeted sub-collection Bills Khakis Tea Label said, “The show has been great for us but we had appointments set up. I think that some of the brands that rely on walk-by business may have felt it was slower because the show was so late this season.”

The new space allowed for a revised layout. Rather than be in the middle of the show, the Vanguards Gallery for emerging brands was separate from the main floor this time and was housed in a dramatic entrance hallway. Vangaurds featured about 30 brands including Bills Khakis Tea Label, the outerwear collection Andrew Marc x Richard Chai and T-shirt brand Minerals. Also on hand there was English Utopia, a line of quilted and coated outerwear by Gary Newbold, formerly of Barbour. This was his MRket debut and his second selling season in the US; the brand is currently stocked in independent specialty stores. Directly across the aisle, bag brand Blue Claw Co. showed a new foldout waterproof model, a preview of its forthcoming leather collection and its signature clean-looking canvas styles.

On the main floor, traditional preppy looks were celebrated by such brands as Vineyard Vines and Southern Tide while English-inspired outdoorsy ones were on display at brands such as Barbour. In total, more than 325 brands exhibited at MRket.

Stylist Michael Macko again curated a mannequin display of the best looks of the show.  This edition’s Alpine-themed “Macko’s Picks” was especially whimsical since every mannequin had the head of a forest creature. The next edition of MRket takes place in Las Vegas February 17-19.
