Show Report: Project Las Vegas

Despite new competition this season, Advanstar’s Project show continued its reign as the premier showcase in Las Vegas for contemporary apparel and premium denim. The vast show, held again at The Mandalay Bay Convention Center, included such major jeans players as Paige, Hudson, AG Adriano Goldschmied, Big Star, Silver Jeans Co and Robin’s Jean.  Trendwise, jeans tended to to get back to basics. There was a return to basic blues and blacks; the bright colors and prints that have been so popular the past few seasons now seem to be officially out of style. For example, Paige Adams-Geller of Paige offered up a very dark spring 2014 collection that she said was inspired by a chaotic world and one’s need to create order and harmony in it.

Across the board, the jeans brands at Project also agreed that the skinny silhouette remains the top style. Moto-inspired pants were also hot items and are being pushed by Robin’s Jean and Rogue, among many others.

Curated by show president Tommy Fazio, The Tents at Project, a special area highlighting the best of contemporary and designer menswear, returned this season and was again the show’s crown jewel. It included recent CFDA Award winner Public School, the new Made in USA luxury brand Mother Freedom, the heritage UK brand Kent & Curwen and Rodd & Gunn, a New Zealand-based brand that is making rapid expansion in the United States.

Exhibitors said that show traffic at Project was inconsistent, but good overall. Nik Rush of Rod & Gunn, for instance, said that only one buyer visited the brand’s booth on Monday but that 22 showed up the following day.
