Show Report: Pool Trade Show

This season’s edition of the Pool trade show, which ended its three-day run at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas yesterday, was heavy on humor and irony. The refreshing brand mix included several T-shirt labels whose graphics prompted laughs.

Among them was Oddsome, a Canada-based brand with a logo that features a donkey and chicken, two underappreciated animals according to CEO Dre Bennett. Its shirt messages included riffs on hipster hot spots with the question: Where The Fuck is Brooklyn New York? (and Los Angeles, Paris and Seoul, Korea options). It also had a cute “Laundry Day T-Shirt” model.

Likewise, Dilascia, a popular California-based T-shirt brand by Patrick Dilascia, stressed geography with “It’s Always Sunny in Portland” shirt and one of a map of the continental United States that highlighted New York and California and referred to the rest of the country as “Other.”

Accessories brand Freaker USA from North Carolina showed its vast collection of drink insultators from a trailer-style booth. And LA-based designer Freddie Rojas chuckled as he showed us the bucket hat he created from dead stock Ralph Lauren fabric with teddy bears. All in all, Pool was a refreshing reminder that creativity is alive and well in the young and/or independent design community.
