SHOW REPORT: OUTDOOR 2011 WITH GOOD RESULTS

The 18th edition of the OutDoor trade show (July 14-17) set records across the board, with 21,520 visitors (+5%) and over 1,000 media representatives (+10%) from around the world as well as 890 exhibiting brands (+3%). "There is a vitality and character to the fair that is unique and we combine all the elements that make the outdoor sector such a vibrant and exciting place to be involved with,” David Udberg, President of the European Outdoor Group (EOG), summed up at the end of the show. 62% of the OutDoor’s industry visitors came from abroad, with the strongest increases in North America and Asia. Altogether, 91 countries were represented at the show.

Among the trends were again the search for new materials which are lighter and more breathable. Light summer down jackets were again visible in many collections, and have been a trend for a few seasons already. Bright colors again are very important, especially green shades and purple. Colorblocking by using contrasting fabrics and zippers is a standard design and still relevant. In terms of sports, a growing number of specific capsule collections for bouldering and climbing demonstrate the move towards a mass sports. Slacklines, too, are on their heights, being ideal for urban surroundings. Trail running and speed hiking are meant for alpine settings, forcing the industry to develop specific products, too.

The four days on the shore of Lake Constance have demonstrated the great potential of the outdoor industry. "Without exception, everyone involved has mentioned the strong performance of the OutDoor 2011,” said Klaus Wellmann, CEO of Messe Friedrichshafen. “The leading European tradeshow really showed off its strength this year – from covering exactly the right trends to high profile opinion leaders and increased international participation”.

The next edition of OutDoor will take place from July 12-15, 2012.
