Review GDS: Waiting for summer


High expectations at the current GDS that closed its doors on Friday (March 14): during the Dusseldorf footwear trade show, brands as well as retailers were looking forward to July, when GDS starts its new concept with a new hall structure and settings (please also read our previous coverage here). But most of all it is the new and significantly earlier date of the trade event (30 July - 1 August) that is highly appreciated: "The earlier date is much better for us. The old dates were too late for us because it's the time when we close the order books, that was the reason why GDS became more and more a mere information platform for us," says Pierre Lefebvre, General Manager Bosum Trading (Wolverine, Keds, O'Neill, Maruti). Nadja Friedrich agrees: "We prefer the early date because we already start selling beginning of June."

But back to the current event: Even though the new concept dominated the reception of GDS, the last edition in the 'traditional' way showed solid results likewise. "GDS is an important place for us because Germany is our biggest market," says Jorge Hernandez, Sales and Marketing Director of Art.

As for ladies trends, there is still a high demand for ankle boots and especially flat booties in biker styles with wide bootlegs in washed leather, but with less decoration. The sneaker market is still ruled by Nike's top sellers, such as the Free and the Air Max that can be spotted in a great variety (as copies) from other brands.

For men variations of boots (Chelsea, biker, etc.) and high top sneakers for wintery weather conditions (lined, made of leather) were all around.
