Ruby by Martin Margiela
22 Apr. 2009
RUBY BY MARTIN MARGIELAThe French motorcycle helmet maker Ruby has collaborated with the famous Belgian designer Martin Margiela on the third edition of its special “Signature” collection series.
For this task Margiela reinterpreted the principles of his house and drew on a collective team effort to produce the helmet. The carbon shell of the Ruby was varnished, then converted with broad lines of paint with a “Meudon white effect,” some of the hallmarks of the fashion house. Colleagues of the designer and the design team then engraved their names and initials into the layer of white paint. Ruby’s traditional cardinal red interior was also replaced by black leather. The logo, meanwhile, was created in chrome and white.
The Ruby by Martin Margiela has been produced in a limited edition of 600 and costs €740, or roughly $975 in the US.
Owned by Diesel Group, the house of Martin Margiela is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Ruby was founded 2004 by the French designer Jérôme Coste, who wanted to create a helmet that combines classic designs with new technologies. It took three years of preparation before the first helmets were produced and sold by Colette in Paris.
