Palladium debuts first concept storePalladium announces the opening of its first retail store, located in the heart of Amsterdam, on Leidsestraat 19 in the busy pedestrian section. Since re-launching in mid 2009, Palladium has proven themselves to be as relevant as ever, with the timeless design of the Pampa boot resonating globally due to its utilitarian look and authentic heritage. The 85 square metre/950 square foot store was designed by German design team Gadde & Wawro, and based on a theme of ‘second life’. The primary display units in the store are reclaimed rubble bins, salvaged and restored by the designers and given a second life within the Palladium retail environment. Gadde & Wawro are designers and carpenters whose work includes a specialization in producing transport packaging in a design and art context. The rubble bins, containing real concrete rubble, were used for transporting concrete from construction sites and from abandoned urban terrain. The rubble bins fit perfectly with the urban exploration theme that Palladium has made the centerpiece of its brand communication. The Palladium store uses concrete as a central theme to define color and texture, while retaining a boutique, minimalist feeling. Simplicity and efficiency are characteristics that define both the Palladium product line as well as their retail design concept.
Palladium was founded in 1920 to make aircraft tires for the aviation industry. In 1947, after the end of WWII, the demand for tires dries up, and Palladium put their canvas and rubber expertise to use by making boots that were as hard wearing as their tires. Palladium soon became outfitters of the legendary French Foreign Legion with their classic canvas Pampa boot. Over 60 years later the timeless design of Palladium’s signature Pampa boot is as relevant as ever and available once again for explorers worldwide.
