OBEY TO LAUNCH POP-UP STORE IN NEW YORK CITYStreet brand Obey Clothing is launching a pop-up store in New York City on April 30. The opening coincides with Obey artist Shepard Fairey’s May Day Art Show opening at Deitch Projects on May 1.
The pop-up shop, through May 16, at 151 Orchard Street will serve as a clothing store and a visual narration of Fairey’s work to date. Capturing the raw aesthetic of the Obey brand, the shop is also designed to evoke a sense of nostalgia. Hand-stenciled vintage military jackets showcased in shadow boxes and wood frame silk screens line the walls of the store. There also will be a collection of custom spray-paint cans, showcasing some of Obey’s most famous iconography. Meanwhile, a collage installation of black and white photos displaying plastered OBEY images from around the world will feature along one wall, transporting customers to the time of their first Obey sighting.
The shop will offer a selection of 30 hand-stenciled one-of-a-kind T-shirts (at Fairey’s studio), limited edition pop-up store tees, and commemorative Shepard Fairey May Day T-shirts based on a fine art piece from his exhibition. The May Day T-shirt will also be available at shop.obeyclothing.com and at the Ace Hotel NYC.
Additionally, the store will stock a hand-selected array of men’s and women’s Obey clothing. The curated Obey collection ranges from clean and classic styles to more forward designs, including slouchy tanks, tie-dyes, lightweight double-faced wovens, military-inspired jackets, and a wide variety of denim. Other notable products include Obey Posse shirts and artist series shirts by the poster artist Alan Forbes.
The Obey May Day pop-up shop will be open weekdays from 1-7 and on weekends from 12-7.
