NEW BERLIN AWARD PROMOTES YOUNG FASHION DESIGNERS“Start your Fashion Business” is a new design competition organized by the Senatsverwaltung für Wirtschaft, Technologie und Frauen and aimed at young Berlin fashion designers.
Judged according to criteria such as “Serious Games” and “Visual Effects,” it is the third in a series to promote young creative talents on behalf of the countrywide initiative “Projekt Zukunft” and the competition series “Berlin – made to create.” The award was created for designers who are planning to launch or have already launched their labels in Berlin.
“The fashion business has developed into a very promising economic factor in this creative city of Berlin. With the initiative “Start your Fashion Business,” the city of Berlin is supporting young talents to start their business, while at the same time motivating them to remain in Berlin. It will be our duty to further fulfill the specific needs of the creative industry and to support them on their way to become sustainable and competitive companies,” said Berlin’s Minister of Economy.
German Vogue editor-in-chief Christiane Arp, part of the judging panel, added: “There is such a huge creative potential in Berlin that desperately needs to be advanced in order to establish Germany as a place of location on the fashion map.”
By the end of July the judging panel will name three winners who will be awarded €10,000 to €25,000. The prizes include PR support, mentoring, free entrance to fashion fairs, as well as the possibility of having one’s own fashion show during Berlin Fashion Week.
Other members of the judging panel include Melissa Drier (Women’s Wear Daily), Anita Tillmann (Premium Exhibitions), Rike Döpp (Agentur V) and Carl Tillessen (Firma Berlin).
The contest is open to fashion school graduates or young designers who graduated no more than five years ago and self-taught designers that have developed their own collection, provided the fashion label is based in Berlin. The closing date for entries is April, 30 2010.
