MILANO UNICA: MORE INTERNATIONAL VISITORS

Italian textile show Milano Unica held Sep. 8-10 at Milan’s Fieramilanocity (Portello Area), has just ended with some significant results. The show that focused on new fabric trends for f/w 2011/2012 hosted 472 exhibitors and attracted about 13,000 companies (4% more than for the February 2010 edition) with a +17% of foreign companies, while foreign visitors were +25%.

The greatest increase was registered for visiting companies from China. Whereas there were 25 at the last edition, now 230 Chinese companies came to visit Milano Unica. Also a significant increase in visitors from the following countries could be stated: USA (+68%), Hong Kong (+172%), Russia (+45%), France (+37%), The Netherlands (+24%), Germany (+12%), UK (+10%) and Japan (+5%).

The increase in foreign visitors confirms what the Italian textile industry is presently facing. Actually after 12 negative three-month periods, in the first six months of 2010 the Italian textile production has shown a +9% increase in production. Moreover, in 2009, despite the truly difficult period, Italy had maintained its position as second exporting country in the world and worldwide leader of wool fabric exporting countries.

Pier Luigi Loro Piana, President Milano Unica, commented: “The event proves true again to be an important marketing moment for the Italian and European high-quality textile segment. Especially the show of ten new fashion talents ‘On STAGE’ –  a partnership with Woolmark and 46 exhibitors of Milano Unica – was very well accepted.”

The f/w 2011/2012 season focuses in general on hyping soft, cuddling, mohair-like, wooly and hairy aspect materials. Shirts are being strongly influenced by a repolished indigo effect, denim, chambray and chambray-like cottons. In terms of accessories, warm touch effects, recycled and irregular surface materials are hot.
