JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE TALKS WILLIAM RASTSinger/designer Justin Timberlake was recently in Europe to promote his LA-based denim and sportswear label William Rast (williamrast.com). Sportswear caught up with him last month in Düsseldorf, Germany.
Your label William Rast focuses on denim. How important is denim for the fashion business in general?
Jeans are key items in the fashion business; they belong to everybody’s wardrobe. You can wear denim in 10,000 different ways and you can have jeans at any price. You can wear it everywhere — even to film premieres.
What are the inspirations for the William Rast label?
You can find inspiration everywhere — on the street, in a film, a song, a special year or a film of a special year. In fashion you can merge all these influences to create something new. In fashion you have no rules; everything’s possible.
How do you feel about being in the fashion business?
It’s a great feeling. People like William Rast because they like the style. It’s not because I’m part of it. That’s great.
What makes William Rast special? What’s the spirit of the line?
It’s really authentic; it’s a part of us [he and business partner Trace Alaya, both pictured above]. William Rast merges together our two personalities and our life experiences. William Rast is the sum of what we are: a little bit Tennessee and a little bit Hollywood.
What’s the your favourite fashion capital? And why?
I love Paris, I love Rome, Milan, New York. I think, no city is more important than the other. Every city has its own amenities. In fashion the point is to merge together all the difference influences from all over the world.
How important is California for the denim business?
LA is a real denim city. All of Southern California is very important for the denim business because it’s always coming up with new trends, labels and styles.
