Interview: Mark Mahoney about tattoos and trendsTattoos have long entered the mainstream and don't just brand one as an ex-con. From teenagers to grandma and high-street bankers-the love for tattoos unites everyone. But are there acdtually tattoo trends nowadays? Sportswear International's Christopher Blomquist talks to Mark Mahoney of the Shamrock Social Club in Hollywood, California about the current tattoo trends.
What would you say are the current trend in tattoos at the moment?
I was just thinking recently that in the last few months we have been doing tons of feathers for whatever reason. They really seem to be what’s happening in this moment. But there has been this like really long run in the last four or five years of script. We do a lot of fine line script on people – on the ribcage or just about anywhere on the body.
And the people usually have words chosen out beforehand?
Yeah, usually. Ninety-five percent of the time they come in with the Latin or the French or something more romantic than this clumsy language of ours….
Yeah. It just seemed like that. I had remembered a time–and these things are kind of cyclical–in the ’80s I think after Mickey Rourke getting tattooed and he got some American Indian stuff or maybe like some cow skull with a feather and there was a little thing and it seemed like people were getting feathers done. That was 25 years ago and now it has kind of come back around.
I didn’t realize that tattoos were just like fashion–cyclical…
I think, yeah, that’s what we are starting to see. Though now because of how mainstream tattoos are–it is a much larger percentage of the population now that is into it. But I guess the same thing could be said about fashion. Ten years ago ten or even five percent of the people wanted a Louis Vuitton and now 90 percent–no, everybody–wants one.
Is there a particular part of the body that is popular for tattoos now?
I would say that people are doing the hands a lot–doing the fingers and the hands. I guess that’s more kind of like jewelry or accessories. But it seems like we’ve been doing a lot of the hand and the neck. Traditionally you tattooed people down there when they were filled up every place else. It was kind of the last spot but now we are getting people starting there. Even as we speak….
