GDS Presents 860 Exhibitors in DüsseldorfGDS, the international event for shoes and accessories, will be held in Düsseldorf under the theme of “Inspiration to Go” from September 5-7. About 860 labels from 44 countries (an increase of 1%) will show their new collections for spring/summer 2013 within the eleven themed worlds of GDS. Still, despite an additional extensive line-up of side events including catwalk shows, lectures and seminars, CEO of Messe Düsseldorf Werner Matthias Dornscheidt explained, “The current uncertainty in the Eurozone and the economic situation in Southern Europe has had a big impact on the shoe sector.”
Yet the number of premium brands has risen by 4%. This year’s Premium area will host brands such as Bruno Bordese, Civic Duty, Coach, Kalliste, La Bottega Di Lisa, McQ by Alexander Mc Queen, Silent People, Versus and Visconti & du Rèau, as well as the premiere of Vivienne Westwood. The concept area “white cubes,” which was successfully relaunched in March, also scores with thrilling new high-fashion labels such as Walk-over and Moods of Norway. Returning brands that join the 200 progressive fashion labels at white cubes also include Diesel and Calvin Klein.
El Naturalista, Ecogreen, Sioux (Green Grashopper), GrandStep and Boombuz, as well as others, have all committed themselves to the tradeshow’s theme. The label Snipe will be organising a major event with star chef Tim Mälzer, who will be presenting the first compostable traditionally-manufactured leather shoe. GDS Director Kirsten Deutelmoser commented, “More and more brands are focusing on ecologically manufactured fashion, thereby responding to growing shopper demands.”
Last but not least, 100 young designers will take part in the 17th edition of Design Attack, which will turn the hip area into a forgotten harbour town called “Aqua Marina.” The centerpiece is an old beacon surrounded by weather-beaten little streets with a real harbour “dive” and a stranded sailing ship rounding off the scenery. Furthermore, “Consorzio Maestri Calzaturieri del Brenta” will celebrate its 35th anniversary this year with their “Made in Italy” models. There has also been a reported increase in children´s shoe manufacturer interest in GDS with a 16% rise in exhibitor participation compared to last year.
Finally, Global Shoes will be held parallel to GDS. Following the motto, "shoe fashion all along the line," this platform for volume suppliers will present a wide and varied selection of shoe and leather goods. For the next event, more than 350 exhibitors from all major shoe-producing countries are expected to once again participate.
