Dover Street Market: new branch in New York
06 Jan. 2014
First Look: Dover Street Market NYNew York City’s arguably most anticipated new multibrand store has finally arrived.
A Manhattan branch of Dover Street Market, the brainchild of Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo, opened its doors just days before Christmas in a historic building in the retail “no man’s land” of 30th Street and Lexington Ave. The spectacular shop, which joins its sister branches in London and Tokyo, stresses “beautiful chaos,” according to Kawakubo. “I want to create a kind of market where various creators from various fields gather together and encounter each other in an ongoing atmosphere of beautiful chaos: the mixing up and coming together of different kindred souls who all share a strong personal vision,” she says.

The shop consists of seven floors and is not necessarily divided by menswear or womenswear. The first floor includes a relaxation area provided by Rose Bakery plus a selection of jewelry. Floor 2 includes A.P.C., Comme des Garçons Homme, Greg Lauren and Stutterheim, among others. The third floor features Comme des Garçons Homme Deux, Stephan Schneider and Raf Simons among its wider mix. Floor 4 features hard-to-find brands such as 1205, Lou Dalton and Sibling. J.W. Anderson and Rick Owens are among the offerings on the fifth floor. Floor 6, meanwhile, includes Beatles Commes de Garçons, Alexander Wang and Christopher Kane Women’s among its mix. Finally, the top floor features Junya Watanabe Comme des Garçons, Prada, Supreme and Visvim.
