FASHION RETAIL IN RUSSIA: POST-CRISIS PERSPECTIVES

On June 3-4 Russia’s fashion industry chief executives met in Moscow for "Fashion Retail 2010," the third international business forum for owners and general managers of fashion retail chains, manufacturers and distributors. The theme of the event was “Crisis Lessons, Future Strategies” and the key topics on the agenda were those of interest for today’s fashion market and its players in Russia—namely, how is the fashion market changing due to crisis-related pressures and the development of international chains in Russia; the consumer: new growth parameters and green shoots in 2010; development strategies for private labels in Russia; and what ideas allows the leaders to develop their business during a recession. Participants also discussed deregulation in the new customs union between Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, the problems of domestic fashion production, the development of franchise chains, and “lessors vs lessees” in fashion retail. The 40 speakers represented such major companies in Russia as Crocus City Mall, MEGA, Global Retail Network, the RUSPUBLICA designer clothing retail chain, the “Vysshaya Liga” (High League) sportswear retail chain; and manufacturing companies with their own retail chains, including Tom Farr, Ralf Ringer, Finn Flare, Vassa and SELA. In total, more then 150 participants from all over Russia, the former Soviet states, Spain, Great Britain and Germany were present and took part in discussions. The main conclusion drawn by the participants was that the economic crisis is already over in Russia, at least in the fashion business, but its consequences have to be studied and taken into consideration for the future development of national-level retailing.
