BLUE ZONE: GERMAN MARKET SHOWS RECOVERY OF CRISISA positive mood pervaded this week’s textile fairs Munich Fabric Start (Feb. 1-3) and denim-focused Blue Zone (Feb. 1-2) held in Munich's M,O,C Zentrum.
Despite the unsolved problem of increased raw material prices, the general atmosphere was optimistic, especially because the German apparel industry has registered succesful growth results. According to the German textile and fashion confederation (Gesamtverband mode+textil), in 2010, the German textile and clothing industry sector has registered an increase in sales. Not only the local industry expects an increase of approximately 5% in turnover but also a rising, high-level propensity to invest. According to the association, the German market is represening a growth engine in Europe.
Although no official figures are available yet, the fair's organization registered stable attendance results, as well as numbers regarding exhibitors (765 companies, of which about 60 were exhibiting at Blue Zone, from 36 countries). Considering the above mentioned positive economic climate and the opinion expressed by different exhibitors, German jeans manufacturers are a driving force for the casualwear business as are some Italian ones. For this, the present moment seems to hopefully bring better market recovery for the future.
Especially significant was a new initiative started by some of the Blue Zone exhibitors. Some of them, including Tejidos Royo and Isko, not only presented their s/s 2012 fabric collections but also presented some outlook for their new f/w 2012/2013 offer, as part of the "Tomorrow is Today" (TisT) newly launched concept, presenting previews to selected visitors. “I think that this initiative is truly positive and placed in the right moment," commented Panos Sofianos, Product Manager Denim Valley/Tejiods Royo. “I think that jeanswear has to be considered as a product regardless of a season, because it’s made out of truly versatile fabrics that can easily adapt to most different seasons' needs." And Sofianos continues: “I think that throughout the year the denim industry could focus on four main points of time - two main ones for the s/s and f/w seasons, and two intermediate ones that can take place here at Blue Zone."
Key innovations - apart from stretch denim innovations, stable top-selling denims – were focused on denims made with alternative fibers such as mixes of cotton and alternative fibers as eventual alternatives to 100% cotton denims, as well as recycled yarn and eco-minded denims. Blue Zone also hosted a special relaxing area sponsored by Royo and their newest suave tencel-cotton denim fabric family.
For f/w 2012/2013, Tejidos Royo is presenting a special denim development - Denim The Daily Spa. It is a special denim containing tencel fibers that, without the help of any substance, when directly touching the skin, provides cell-renewing, moisturizing, skin- protecting and skin elasticity improving effects. Denim Valley by Tejidos Royo offered Upcycling, a special denim made out of organic cotton, lyocell cotton and recycled polyester. Moreover, Bossa presented a series of denims made out of alternative fibers such as linen or cellulosic fibres. They also offered denims made out of recycled denim scraps.
ITV offered a special tough look soft denim with dirty surface effects. They also offered their "Gummy", a special sateen highly stretch denim. Isko presented a new series of stretch denims, which is very important for the German market. This special series is characterized by high-density, good-recovery denim, a special material that, when employed, jeans of the same size can fit most different body types. Also new was a new red jeather variant, a special leather-like coated breathable denim. Last but not least, they showed their new special proxy finish that helps saving laundry processing.
