BERLIN DAYS IN NEW YORK CITY2009 marks the 20th anniversary of Germany’s reunification and Berlin, the German capital, has thrived since 1989, putting the city in the international spotlight, drawing the likes of US President Barack Obama and making it the place to be, driven particularly by its creative industry and fashion scene.
In honor of this historic occasion, the city of Berlin is sponsoring three days of cultural events in New York at The New Museum and putting the city’s creative potential in the international spotlight.
From today through Apr. 2, the best of Berlin’s fashion designers, film-makers, music-makers and artists will present their work to members of the fashion, film and art industry in New York. The venue will be transformed via digital light projections and installations inspired by the gritty sleek quality of Berlin itself and will play host to Berlin’s creative industries, beginning with an opening night fashion show and gala in which 20 of Berlin’s best designers will showcase their designs. Among the list are Kaviar Gauche, Lala Berlin, Sisi Wasabi, Fiona Bennett, Michalsky, Scherer Gonzales, Firma, Mongrels in Common, Marcel Ostertag, Penkov, Reality Studio and Unrath & Strano.
Following a public wall signing on parts of the original wall and shortly before the fashion show, a panel discussion on approaches to design and sustainability will also take place. The discussion will be moderated by Simon Collins, Design Dean of Fashion at Parson The New School and selected panelists including Shelley Fox, Designer at Donna Karan and Professor of Fashion Design; Melissa Drier, Berlin correspondent for WWD; Dr. Cameron Tonkinwise, Chair of Sustainability and Design Thinking; and Klaus Metz from Esmod Fashion Design School Berlin.
Other highlights include a screening of the new film “Berlin Calling” by acclaimed Berlin director Hannes Stoehr, a “Pecha Kucha” event by Berlin and New York artists and designers, and special performances by internationally renown DJ Paul Kalkbrenner (music for Berlin Calling).
